CV Skills Examples for South African Job Seekers

Learn which skills to include on your CV, how to prove them with real examples, and how to match them to the job description without exaggerating. Every skill on your CV should be one you can explain honestly in an interview.

What are CV skills?

CV skills describe what you can do — not just what job titles you have held. A skill section without proof is just a list of words. The strongest CVs show skills inside the experience bullets: what you did, how often, and with what result. Below are the five main types of skills you may include, depending on the role and your real experience.

Hard skills

Hard skills are measurable, teachable abilities that are specific to a job or industry. Examples include using Excel, operating a till, coding in a programming language, speaking a foreign language, or driving a specific vehicle. These skills are often verified through qualifications, licences, or practical tests.

Soft skills

Soft skills are how you work with other people and manage yourself. Examples include communication, teamwork, adaptability, work ethic, and problem-solving. Unlike hard skills, soft skills are harder to measure, which is why it is important to prove them with examples on your CV rather than just listing words.

Technical skills

Technical skills are specialised hard skills related to a specific field — like software development, bookkeeping, engineering, digital marketing, or data analysis. These often require training, certification, or demonstrated project experience.

Transferable skills

Transferable skills are abilities that apply across different jobs and industries. A cashier's accuracy with money transfers to bookkeeping. A waiter's composure under pressure transfers to a call centre. These skills are especially important for career changers and entry-level candidates.

Role-specific skills

Role-specific skills are the exact skills mentioned in a job advert. The best CVs match the skills listed in the job description — using the same language where accurate — rather than copying a generic list. Always read the job advert first and tailor your skills section.

Important: Include a skill only if it is true

Never add a skill to your CV that you cannot demonstrate. Employers check skills in interviews, practical tests, and reference calls. An honest, well-proven five-skill CV beats an exaggerated ten-skill list every time. If a skill is on your CV, be ready to answer: “Tell me about a time you used this skill.”
