What are transferable skills?
Transferable skills are abilities you have built in one role or industry that apply to another. A cashier's accuracy with money transfers to bookkeeping. A waiter's composure under pressure transfers to a call centre. A teacher's ability to explain complex ideas transfers to training or customer education roles.
The key is to present these skills in the language of the role you want — not the role you are leaving. If a job advert asks for “stakeholder communication,” and you have experience updating parents, suppliers, or shift managers, you can describe that experience using similar professional language — without exaggerating.
How to avoid overstating your experience
Career-change CVs fail when they claim experience the candidate cannot back up. Do not say you “managed a team” if you only showed a new colleague around. Do not say you “led a project” if you only helped with one task. Instead, describe what you actually did, using professional language that is accurate but not inflated.
Use phrasing like “If this is true for you...” and “You can adapt this wording if it matches your real experience...” Employers respect honest candidates who can explain their experience clearly — they do not respect candidates who get caught exaggerating in an interview.
